Our mission

Grow Mongolia's wool industries without wearing out the land they depend on.

The two halves of that sentence pull against each other, and that is the whole problem. More animals means more fibre and more income now. It also means shorter grass, thinner soil, and pasture that recovers more slowly every year. A herder who is measured by headcount has every reason to keep adding animals, right up until the land stops carrying them.

We think the way out runs through price rather than restraint. When herders are paid properly for quality, quality becomes worth more than quantity. Fewer, better animals on healthier grass can earn more than a larger herd on exhausted ground, but only if somebody is actually paying for the difference. So that is what we are trying to build: a market where the difference gets paid.

Three things make it real.

Pasture restoration, on specific land in Uyanga, with herders who are already working it.

A Responsible Production Standard for Mongolian fibre, developed with researchers, herders and producers, so "responsible" becomes something a buyer can verify instead of something a brand asserts.

A Digital Product Passport on every product, carrying its own origin with it, from the collection of the fibre through to the finished piece in someone's hands.

We pay for this ourselves. Wollken Studio is the commercial side and it funds the work, which means we have to prove the model earns its keep rather than waiting for a grant to arrive and doing the work until the grant runs out.

The measure of whether this worked won't be a sales figure. It will be whether the next generation of herding families in the Khangai can still live off that land.
